Congratulations!
Now that you made your choice to buy the finest vacuum prosthesis
made, it's time to decide on the ordering specifications based on
your intended hair style. Your "dream hair" is just 3
months away, but just what exactly does that mean?
Long or short layers, razored or blunt-cut, highlights, lowlights
- how do you make sense of it all? This is a daunting task for any
modern woman with growing hair let alone those of us who haven't
had this type of practice for many years, if any.
This page hopes to provide valuable insight into these questions.
Learning about the geometry of a hairstyle and how certain cuts
effect hair movement along with all of the special effects that
modern hair coloring techniques can provide may help you find your
"dream hair" - the style that lets you feel the most natural
and comfortable - your essential style. From here, you can feel
free to branch out into experimental styles if you get bored. And
please, share your favorite styles with all of us - we can learn
so much from each other!

"I
finally decided to take the leap and try out a short cut this
summer. I'd been observing a young Russian stylist working at
the salon I bring my girls to for their vacuum styling and learned
that she just returned from a trip to the Bumble & Bumble
New York Salon for a master class on straight razor cutting. Right
then, I decided to test her skills on a 4 year-old piece of mine.
If it didn't work, then I didn't have too much to lose. But if
it did I could comfortably recommend her and this cut to my clients.
Well, I honestly LOVE the results. I have a slightly inverted
cut with lots of textured layers that only the sharp edge of a
razor can reveal. The ends are delicately feathered and blended
so beautifully that the cut looks as great freshly combed as it
does after getting blown out by a "windy city (Chicago)"
outing. The color has a lot going on as well; I discovered that
adding lowlights to an oxidized piece can actually look like you've
highlighted your hair!

Many people know right away that they prefer to see themselves in straighter or curlier hair, but there are those times when the head cocks this way and that, and the answer is "I'd like to be able to wear it BOTH ways!" That is when I suggest ordering a "Light Curl" pattern in their desired color and length. See below:
|
 |
|
 |
| Light curl provides the type of curl that is easy to love; controllable curl that looks just as great dry as it does after having gotten caught in the rain or a water park! Distribute some holding product through out the hair while damp-dry and scrunch. Let air-dry or turn head upside-down and use a diffuser for tons of volume and drama! I think the toussled style suggests easy-going and fun-loving. |

| Here is Laurie in the same hairpiece that has been styled with a flat iron. She has an entirely new look that to me, projects a polished sophistication. The front has soft bangs with face-framing layers while the back shows off a modern inverted geometry. I LOVE this look! |
| |
|

Here is Barbie modeling her classic bob with a swing bang - a modern look without taking any chances.
|
|

Joni's
comfort zone is a bit broader than most clients'. The high contrast
chunky highlights really show off her choppy layers in this inverted
modified bob. |
|

Check
out the great face-framing layers used on Hannah's 12" long
soft brown hair. These peek-a-boo bangs are really popular with
young women right now!

|

Lauren
models an example of a 14" long bangless style simply cut
to frame a very sweet face. |

If
you find yourself torn between an older yet secure style with
bangs and a more modern look that is exciting, but dispenses with
bangs, perhaps these two examples can help. The move to ditch
bangs takes a little courage, but with Freedom Wigs' new implant
technique there is less forward fall of the top hair, so bangless
styles are quite easy to live with. The beveled edges make for
a smooth perimeter edge and your stylist's artful razor-cutting
will give you a very natural wispy fringe that will fall out when
you tuck the sides behind your ears or pull it up into a clip,
ponytail or updo. You are now ready to present your entire beautiful
face. Just a note here to be sure to stay on top of your permanent
cosmetic brow touch-ups if you need them as they will be more
visible now! I do mine once a year.
Amy
and Kara both appear to have "grown up" in my opinion.
What do you think? By the way, Kara had some great caramel highlights
added to her medium brown hair.
Pictured
above is Kara with and without bangs. Below is Amy, before with
bangs and after with a new look.

How
important is the geometry of your cut? Look at this example of
a dated line vs a modern one. I think it took at least 5 years
off of Leah! She went from dowdy to cute + perky! |

Here
is a dramatic photo pairing of Lisa before and after receiving
her first vacuum hairpiece. I think the upgrade is quite obvious!
We chose a light blonde and then highlighted it to achieve an
"arctic blonde" to electrify Lisa's Caribbean-blue eyes. |
|
|
|
|
It's
hard to argue with this long layered, smooth, style. Check out
the fringe work with her hair pulled back and you can understand
how this technique opens up the area surrounding Lisa's beautiful
face. With the softly added highlights, she looks like a California
surfer girl to me! |

When
she first discovered her alopecia, this very brave woman decided
to live openly with it and didn't even attempt to cover her head.
When she began wearing her vacuum hairpiece, she gained the choice
of talking about her alopecia or not. That's a nice choice to
have! |

|
This
engaged couple made the decision to order a vacuum hairpiece for
the groom-to-be and it arrived just a week before their wedding
- whew! Talk about a great wedding present! |
|

|
|
If you
happen to be single with alopecia and wonder if it will ever
be possible to love and be loved by a man who will become your
life mate, here are two beautiful examples. Both of these women
have learned what we all truly believe in our hearts - it's
what's inside that counts. Hair is merely an accessory to that.
When you wear a vacuum hairpiece, your perspective instantly
seems to align with this thinking. Of course, we LOVE our accessories!
My congratulations goes out to Lindsay and Patrick and Nancy
and Tom. I wish for you two couples to live and love for a very,
very long time.

I have
almost as much fun with my hair as I do with my honey, Jim Peterik
- this year we celebrated our 35th wedding anniversary!. Pictured
is my "exercise" hard cap vacuum (ask me why I use
a hard cap vacuum for this activity) with a darker base color
and scads of chunky pale blonde highlights. The light curl is
perfect for holding up during hot, sweaty workouts. A great
benefit of the non-porous cap is that my hair stays dry, so
that after class, I can duck into the women's room, dry my head
and the inside of the cap, and then run those errands straight
from working out without having wet hair. See, one more item
for the hair loss consolation list!
Here
I am with my wonderful husband Jim.
Jim, along with his band - The Ides Of March - are responsible
for the beautiful music you are listening to while visiting
my site.
